Chair, RACGP Expert Committee – General Practice Advocacy and Funding

The RACGP Expert Committee – General Practice Advocacy and Funding (REC–GPAF) advocates for an appropriately funded general practice workforce in order to better support the provision of safe, sustainable and high-quality general practice.

In addition to the annual preparation of the RACGP pre-budget submission, overviews of the federal Budget and the Mid-Year Economic and Financial Outlook (MYEFO), and producing the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) fee summary, the REC–GPAF continued to lead advocacy relating to Medicare, including:

  • developing several submissions to the MBS Review Taskforce
  • providing advice to government regarding mechanisms to improve Medicare compliance
  • coordinating and supporting the RACGP’s response to changes in the after-hours sector
  • developing resources to support general practice business sustainability.

Other areas of advocacy in 2017–18 included:

  • life insurance and regulations regarding the release of patient information
  • pharmacy, focusing on support for general practice–based pharmacists and concerns regarding the expanding role of community pharmacy
  • providing advice to government regarding medical indemnity insurance
  • working with other medical colleges regarding best practice for referrals.

The REC–GPAF also oversaw the work of three working groups, whose work encompasses:

  • reviewing the Vision for general practice and a sustainable healthcare system
  • coordinating and supporting the RACGP’s response to changes in the after-hours sector
  • developing resources to support general practice business sustainability.
